Stair ascent/descent in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine the age-related abnormalities of stair climbing in autism. Kinematical data were collected for 9 autistic individuals (4 of 6-8 years of age (children) and 5 of 11-12 years of age (adolescents)) and 9 control subjects (3 children and 6 adolescents). Subjects ascended and descended the one step laboratory stair always starting by right leg. Movement time of stairs ascent in autistic adolescents was longer then in control and they executed this motion with knee and hip less flexed then control adolescents. Autistic children ascended and descended stair faster then autistic adolescent. During stair descent autistic adolescents flexed hip less then control as well. Autistic children have larger amplitude of ankle joint plantar flexion then autistic adolescents during stair descent. Maximum knee flexion during stair ascent/descent was delayed in autistic adolescent in comparison to the control. Significant difference of movement coordination between children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder indicates the importance of yearly rehabilitation program.

The aim of the study was to determine the age-related abnormalities of stair climbing in autism. Kinematical data were collected for 9 autistic (4 of 6-8 years of age (children) and 5 of 11-12 years of age (autistic adolescents)) and 8 control individuals (5 of 20-60 years (adult) and 3 of 12 years (adolescents)). Subjects ascended and descended the one step laboratory stair always starting with right leg. Results show that control adolescents have greater movement time of stair ascent compared to descent (1.55 s (SD 0.01) vs 1.33 s (SD 0.06)). During stair descent autistic adolescents have less ankle joint plantar flexion than control adolescents (29.0% (SD 4.3 vs 39.7%(SD 5.9)). Hip abduction during stair ascent in control adolescents was larger than in adults and in autistic adolescents. Significant difference of movement coordination between
controls and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder indicates the importance of early rehabilitation programs.

Muscular Aftereffects and the Maintenance of Balance in Healthy Subjects and Patients with Impaired Sensorimotor Integration V. L. Talis, M. A. Kapitonov, E. V. Maksimova. The vertical posture of patients with impaired sensorimotor integration was compared with that in healthy subjects before and after 30 sec of involuntary cervical muscle contraction. Studies were performed on seven patients with impaired sensorimotor integration. The movement trajectories of the center of mass were recorded for 30 sec in the standing position with the eyes open and closed and on foam rubber with the eyes open before and after involuntary contraction of the cervical muscles. The areas of oscillation of patients standing with the eyes open and on foam rubber were greater than those in healthy subjects, while the mean positions of the center of mass standing with the eyes open and closed were closer to the axis of the talocrural joints. Closing of the eyes had a smaller destabilizing effect on patients than on healthy subjects. Contraction of the cervical muscles for 30 sec in healthy subjects led to a backward displacement of the center of pressure toward the axis of the talocrural joints, especially on standing with the eyes open, along with a decrease in the length of the center of pressure curve, especially its frontal components, on standing on foam rubber. In patients, the aftereffects of involuntary cervical muscle contraction consisted of a reduction in the area of oscillations on foam rubber and a relative increase in frontal oscillations while standing with the eyes closed. These results lead to the conclusion that standing in patients with impaired sensorimotor integration was more sensitive to changes in proprioceptive than visual afferentation, while 30-sec involuntary cervical muscle contraction brought measures of vertical stability in patients closer to age-normal values.

"The level of tonical regulation is the basis of child's mental formation"

Years of the practical training of the "special children", as also the review of literature let us conclude, that the motor control level, named by N.A. Bernstein, as a rubrospinal level of paleokinethikal regulation, could be considered not only as the basis of movement construction, but also as the basis of the entire psychological development of the child. This assumption based on the functional futures of this level: the integrity and the stability are the necessary conditions of the mental and motion functioning; the constant afferent income is the basis of self-consciousness, "awareness of myself".

Key words: N.A. Bernstein, deep sensation, tonus, ontogenesis
